There are multiple species sold in the aquarium trade as Ghost Shrimp. Some species are peaceful while others can be fairly aggressive. It is very difficult to differentiate between these species; however, the ones that have red markings on the claws or legs tend to be the more aggressive types.
Tank Setup: Does best in a planted tank
Common Name(s): Ghost shrimp, glass shrimp, grass shrimp, freshwater river shrimp, etc.
Scientific Name: Palaemonetes paludosus
Max Size: 2 inches
Life Span: About 1 year
Min Tank Size: 5 gallons
Tank Region: Bottom
Breeding: This species can be bred in freshwater, but the larvae require specialized micro-foods to survive. The larvae rarely survive as the freshwater aquarium often does not contain enough plankton.
Gender Identification: As the eggs are green females will almost always have a green saddle
Compatibility: Does best in a species only tank
Ease of Keeping: Beginner
Care: pH: 7.0 or higher; Temperature: 64-80 F / 17-27 C
Do not purchase ghost shrimp that appear milky white as these specimens have an internal bacterial infection that will kill them. If one should turn white or die remove immediately to avoid spreading this infection. Do not feed these infected shrimp to other aquatic life either.
