  • Importance of buying a new test kit

Well, I tested my water in my tank with my old test kit and new test kit:

    Old Test Kit Nitrate: 80ppm
    New Test Kit Nitrate: 5ppm

What a difference a new test kit can make...

It was about 2-3 years old, FW API Master Test Kit. I tested it twice

Oh that is pretty old! lol..Mine is less than a year so I'm not worried yet. I'm quite sure I'll run out of fluids before it expires!

I tend to replace the few I use on a yearly basis. However, with low stocking, frequent waterchanges and having used the same water for 33 years, I don't tend to test it very often.

I've recently started to test my water again because of EI dosing. That is why I had an old test kit that was hardly used.

To clarify, for people who have to deal with city water, I HIGHLY suggest you keep them handy and fresh.

What is the last 4 digits printed in the Lot #? The older kits didn't print expiration dates.

If the nitrate kit is thoroughly mixed before each use, and if stored properly those kits last at least 3 years, maybe longer. I know the hardness kits are good for 5 years.

I had a Nitrate kit that was low in fluid and it was giving inaccurate readings; same every time. Got a new kit and nitrates were around 80 ppm. Lol old kit gave me 10 ppm. I have learned to replace kit even when it starts to get very low or you can get an inaccurate reading.

Where is the batch number located?

The Lot Number should be printed somewhere on the bottle. If it is a newer one it will have an Expiration Date printed on it.
