  • Am I doing this right?

I dug some dirt out to make a spring pole for my dog and was wondering if I could use the deep red yard dirt. It was about 10 feet down. Also, I have Osmocote plus, Red Mexican Clay and Organic garden dolomite lime, with magnesium, calcium and other nutrients. Can I use them? So far I put it in my tank but it's not filled yet.

It is always a gamble using dirt from the yard. Not that it won't work out, but to be safe I'd not add any critters for a couple of months to be sure. And during this time, only focus on live plants and testing water to ensure it cycles properly and there are no issues that potentially could lead to deaths. One of the biggest issues with soil is that it compacts and can go anaerobic, especially if it contains clay.

If you decide to give it a try, please share your experiences.
