  • Question: Plant taxonomy abbreviations

I've been trying to figure out what "ver" means?

    I know:

    var. - variant, variety
    sp.- not specified
    ver. - ?

    Does anyone have a clue?

Do you have an example of how ver is being used? Is it on our site? Could it be a typo?

Oh no...it was a different site.

When describing Anubias, both var. and ver. were used. I will try to find the website.

I believe var and ver are the same thing. From what I have read sp. means species.

I did a quick search for ver. And, it does appear to be interchangeable with var.

As for the sp. abbreviation, I think you both are correct. I believe the abbreviation itself is for species; however, it is used when the actual species is unknown. For example, Aponogeton sp. as I call my mystery aponos.
