  • Helpful hint when picking Anubias at the LFS

I wanted to share my experience with picking a healthy Anubias at the LFS this method doesn't work with mail order.

    1. Inspect the leaves making sure there are no pin holes, curly or yellowing unless you are buying a Anubias Wrinkle Leaf or Anubias Nana Gold.

    2. Inspect the rhizome for a nice dark green color.

    3. Feel the rhizome for firmness. If it is mushy-do not buy.

    4. Smell the rhizome. If it smells rancid and you will know if it does-do not buy.

If all else fails and you an unhealthy Anubias and has a mushy rhizome the get a sharp knife and cut off the infected parts.

This is a picture of Rhizome rot. Can you see black coloration?

I just can't find any locally. The price isn't that great, but if they're a decent size then that makes up for it.

Coffeefolia has a brownish/reddish stem, dark green pleated leaves.

Coffeefolia is very different from the others. Most anubias have different leaf shapes. Coffeefolia adds the ribbed leaves, red stems and tank leaves that turn green. Very unique plant!

As for pricing. I paid $15 for mine. The rhizome was about 6 inches. So, about $2.50 per inch of rhizome.

I've never seen coffeefolia at Petsmart, though I've gotten nana, congensis, and aflezii there. I got my coffeefolias at an LFS and paid about $8 I think. They put out a new leaf about every week

                              Thanks for the tips, CJ
