  • Giving one last try (nelumbo nucifera)

    I just ordered some nelumbo nucifera seeds and giving it one more try. I think the first time, I didn't nick it deep enough. I should get the seeds next week. If all else fails, buying the ubers.

            Here are the seeds. I'm going to my buddy's house to use his tools to knich the shell so I can start growing them

            To give you an idea how hard the outer shell is, archaeologist have found lotus seeds in ancient dried up lotus bed over 1000 years old and were able to grow the seeds.

                I'll take that interesting fact to mean these should be no problem NS. Good luck, what will you be using, a dremel?

                  The only problem is nicking it correctly so I don't destroy the center of the seed. Not sure what the tool is but I will take a picture of it.

                    How does the outer shell open in nature? Can you replicate that in fast forward?

                      Main propagation for these plants aren't through seeds but through tubers. I think the seeds are secondary as a backup plan. Just in case of droughts.

                      I can only speculate that the shells crack through extreme weather. Being exposed to the heat then water and then heat makes the shells crack. They are fast growers once the outer shell is cracked.

                          I wouldn't suggest this plant as tank plant but more a pond plant. They grow big and fast.
