  • Adventures in Parent Raising Angelfish

Hard to believe that my first parent raised spawn is almost 2 months old! I have tried many times at parent raising, unsuccessfully. But finally found a pair that managed to figure it out.

The parents are a 3rd generation female in my Koi line; and a 2nd generation male in a friend's Koi/Gold Marble line.

    Rec Capped Koi female

    Genetically she is Gm/g - S/S (Gold Marble/Gold - double dose Stripeless)

    Gold Marble male

    Genetically he is Gm/g - S/+ (Gold Marble/Gold - single dose Stripeless)

This male was so aggressive that I was not able to find him a home where he wouldn't terrorize the tank! I came oh so close to selling him. But when I lost my Red Capped Koi male, I took a chance. And this proved to be the answer. He would still pull his shenanigans with the female, but she always stood her ground and never put up with his bullying. Definitely took the wind out of his sails!

It took several tries, and some spawns that could get to the free swimming stage before eaten. I was about to give up, but decided to give them one more try. And bingo. They were able to successfully raise 90 fry for about 3 weeks.

    Here's a couple of videos......

What a beautiful pair of Angel. Wish one day when my Angels mature and pair that they would be able to raise their frys without any intervention from me.

With patience you will too have parent raised fry CJ.

I had to set up a separate tank for the fry around 3 weeks because the female was getting beat up pretty bad.

I will let you know when they are big enough to ship. I figure that will be in another month.

Thanks for the compliments....even if they were for selfish reasons.

Just be patient! They are growing, but Koi grows slow. Check back in a month.

Here's a video I took tonight feeding them BBS/napuli with a turkey baster. Taken by my cell phone so the quality is not great.
