  • 40 Gallon Breeder Community Tank

Ok, So this tank started my MTS addiction, and I have the Petco $1/gallon sale to blame ... because it was there and I grabbed it and it fit in my car (and my car made it home which I didn't think it would!) and I managed to carry it into the house and set it up by my self... which was awkward, and completely irrelevant! Anywho!

So this tank is my first attempt at a community tank, all of my prior tanks had been lightly to moderately planted species only tanks.Since this is a journal, I'll keep this first post updated with the stock here, and below that will be the story as it progresses!

    Current Lists (updated 6/19/13)
    Equipment:
    - 40 gallon breeder tank
    - Grech hw-303 canister filter
    - Zoomed Aquasun 36" T5HO Lamp with Florasun and Ultrasun bulbs
    - Fluval 88g CO2 system
    - small air pump

    Fish:
    1 Female blue gourami (Etta)
    6 green corydoras
    6 gold pristella tetra
    3 cardinal tetra
    2 assassin snail
Pest snails (pond, ramshorn, MTS I'm sure)

    Plants:
    Ludwigia repens
    Diandra didiplis*
    Mayaca Fluviatilis
    Ludwigia Cuba
    Hygrophila brown
    2 Kleiner bar swords
    Java ferns
    dwarf sag subulata
    Elatine triandra**
    Helanthium tenellum
    Marsilea minuta
    Glossostigma*
    Dwarf Hair Grass
    duckweed
a fake rock covered in some algae
    Ludwigia hybrid red
    Ludwidia atlantis
    Creeping jenny
    Crypt walkeri
    Eriocoulon parkeri
    Bacopa salzamannii
    Bacopa Myriophylloides
    Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Cuba'
    Hygrophila tiger
    water wisteria?

    * - not sure if thats what it actually is ... will wait til it grows in more and get a more positive ID.
** - not doing well, may not be salvageable :'(

Thanks well ... it WAS pretty til I got the itch to reorganize ... I think I've effectively destroyed my tank But Etta's happy and the Kleiner Bar is still growing, so I'm happy I suppose? ... :'(

November I added my big baby, the Kleiner Bar Sword and by December it had twins!

Sometime even later I added Dry ferts, and by January I had a minijungle of Water Wisteria, amazon sword and bacopa! So I gave it away and replaced with something else (still not sure why). I had a bit of a negative effect on my tank after removing the giant sword and was now fighting pinholes in ... just about everything :'(
(I had better before/after pics ... dunno where they are, sorry. I'll post when I find 'em!)

Then there was the "Big move!!!" Where my bro and I moved the tank like ... 5 feet so it sat on top of a supporting I-beam I discovered so I could sleep at night! Oh and it was set atop a stand I built ... so I could lose sleep at night! But I digress

Upon such a move, I removed all fish, and all plants, rescaped (I have to fix this issue of sand moving and swallowing up my rockwall!)

The tetras hate it, but My baby girl Etta (The Blue Gourami) has really come back to her old self! Where she used to hide, she's now out and saying hello to me again! I still have to move slowish but at least she isn't TOO quick to hide anymore! apparently she's claustrophobic? Anywho. That's my fast summary of my 40 gal breeder!

That is one beautiful looking tank. I'm sure the tetras will come around eventually.

                        Update:

I have swapped out my Aqueon HOB for a canister filter. While I've noticed some growth, I was surprised to see new growth on the Marsilea (or glossostigma, not sure which one since I have both) AND a few strands of DHG popped out from the other side I'm happy! I'll get a pic today after a water change. Along with my plant growth, I've got algae growth as well Oh well.

Ok, I'll have to add pics when I'm at my laptop, so a video will have to suffice for now Here's my tank update!

I'll admit, it's a weeee bit long! I got carried away with the record button!
