  • 60 Gallon Cichlids!

    I changed out my lights!

    Before:

Left half new, right half old:

    All new!:

Switched from the Marineland "natural daylight" do the zoo med ultra sun lights. 15W T8, so nothing powerful...just wanted colors to stand out a bit more.

Also got some terra cotta pots so my convict has somewhere else to be than my jd's cave. Finally got a background too! Just went pure black.

My fish are now wondering what those strange orange things are....lol.

Nice tank, the new lights brought out the colors of the tank well and it looks brighter too.

Thanks! I hope so lol. She's been wanting his cave since they were both in the tank. Lately it's been pretty tough battle.

Nutso gets all the credit for turning me onto those zoo med lights. Hey, I'm punny!

Thank you. I'm thinking of switching the sand to black but that's a pretty large undertaking at the moment. Mostly I don't like the look of the diatoms on the white sand. That won't fix the problem either because they're growing in the filter tubes and those are far too long to scrub brush out. I'm hoping the background will keep light from the tubes and kill the diatoms at least a bit. I think the problem is all the silicates in my tap water. No matter how much or little light I give the tank the diatoms seem to persist. I'd have to do a total blackout for a while and that would kill my abubias. Even my 10g shrimp tank is experiencing problems. I know that's a sign of a new tank and is expected, but my 60 is 9 months old. At least the shrimp will eat the diatoms in the 10g. I just need to think of something for the 60 because there will be a time where I won't want to stick my hand in the tank with my dempsey anymore lol.

Diatoms thrive in lower light. They seem to die off in higher light. Just my experience .

Lol indeed! I like how they look a bit better than I thought I might.

I can't really get high light without changing my fixtures entirely. I guess for now I'll live with them. High light in my 10g should kill the diatoms eventually, then. Especially combined with the pond snails and shrimp (when I get them, and there will be pictures!).
